HOUSTON HYBRID SPEAKER SERIES -

Houston Water Talks

URISA Texas is pleased to announce its special Hybrid Speaker Series in Houston!

Come join us in person or online!

Listen to the Houston Water GIS Team share their experiences with Utility Network and the various tool sets they use on the daily.

Meet Our Presenters:

Marc Garcia, GIS Analyst

In 2018, Marc Garcia earned his bachelor's degree in Environment & Sustainability from Sewanee: The University of the South. Shortly thereafter, he began working as a GIS Specialist in the services department of a land and financial software company based in Canada. During his time there, he became more familiar with the principles of GIS professional work. After navigating the challenges posed by a certain pandemic, he seized the opportunity to serve as a GIS Analyst for the City of Houston, where he continues to learn and utilize ESRI's native tools (Experience Builder, Field Maps, Survey123) as well as external tools (Python and FME). When he’s not contributing to city projects, you can often find him fishing outdoors or relaxing in bed, depending on the weather.

Kay Lynn Martin, GIS Analyst

After beginning her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Forestry in 1989, where she first discovered – and became deeply intrigued by – GIS, Kay ‘Lynn’ Martin spent the next 20 years exploring a different career path, always keeping her interest in GIS in the back of her mind. In January 2016, she returned to her GIS roots, enrolling in a two-year Geospatial Sciences program and graduating in May 2017. That summer, she jumped into the role of GIS Technician at a local utility company, and shortly after, leveled up to GIS Analyst at a major oil company. Here, Lynn contributed to a range of geospatial projects, from upstream to midstream to regulatory work. Now, as a GIS Analyst with Houston Water, she has seen much of the migration to the Utility Network Model - still on the journey that began with a chance discovery in 1989.

Somaria Sammy, Sr GIS Analyst

Somaria is a Senior GIS Analyst at Houston Public Works. Her entry to GIS began as a trainee draftsman back home in Trinidad & Tobago where she conducted field work and created drawings in AutoCAD. Since then, her GIS experience has spanned areas such as planetary remote sensing, pipeline integrity, legal support and now water utility data management. Somaria began using FME in 2019 and has enjoyed applying this tool for data analysis. She is excited to share with you how Houston Water is utilizing FME to interact with their Utility Network Model.
