    Meet Our Panelists:

Aaron Butterer – HDR GIS Lead, TX Gulf Coast and Louisiana

As the GIS lead, Aaron is responsible for managing GIS implementation, operation, and administration for our local government clients within the Gulf Coast Region. With almost 20 years of industry experience, he has provided geospatial support to a variety of customers including state, local, and federal government, private corporations, native corporations, institutes of higher education, and railroads.

    Midori Charles  Senior Imagery Analyst

(additional responsibilities include Business Analyst and Client Management)

My GIS career started back in 2011 when I made a lateral move in the Marine Corps from Personnel Administration to Imagery Analysis and fell in love with it. The following year I graduated from the National Geospatial Intelligence College and since then I have worked on numerous federal projects both in and out of the United States. I have also had an opportunity to work with Police Departments in California and Texas where I developed Computer Aid Dispatch (CAD) software and created their Record Management Systems. From there, I began working on Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program Topographic Map (MTM) projects at a university in Mississippi.  I have also assisted an Ohio County auditor to build their GIS platform with public facing interactive services, and on a larger scale of working with an engineering firm as a GIS Manager. Now, I’m back to my roots contracting with the Marine Corps doing Imagery Analysis. It has been quite a long and fruitful journey, yet always humbling to know that you will never stop learning in this field.

    Alma Frith

    Geospatial Specialist

    Engie North America

Alma Frith is a dedicated Geospatial Specialist with a rich background in GIS. She is currently working at Engie North America, where she leverages advanced geospatial technologies to support renewable energy projects. Alma's diverse cultural background from Kazakhstan, combined with her experiences in Houston, Texas, enriches her unique perspective in the field. Her career is marked by a commitment to mitigating risk and protecting value through geospatial data analysis and advanced GIS tools.

    Fabian Gutierrez

    Electric GIS Technician

    San Diego Gas Electric (SDGE)

I am an Electric GIS Technician for San Diego Gas Electric (SDGE) with a little over one year of experience. In my day-to-day task, I receive a variety of jobs ranging from: preliminary designs, as-builts, emergency jobs, etc.… After going through these jobs, I either digitize the design into ArcMap brand new or if they are as-builts I update ArcMap to current field conditions. As far as my education, I received my BA in Geography and GIS Certificate from CSU Long Beach. Outside of work, I am passionate about aviation and enjoy exercising my privileges as a private pilot. I also enjoy playing golf and exercising a couple times a week. I am always looking for new opportunities to expand my knowledge in GIS and aviation.

    Emily LaSala

    GIS Analyst

    Pinal County Public Works

My name is Emily LaSala. I am the GIS Analyst for Pinal County Public Works in Florence, Arizona. I have worked for Pinal County for the past 1.5 years. I started working at Pinal County before graduating from Arizona State University with degrees in Geographic Information Science and Conservation Biology & Ecology. I graduated in December 2022 with high honors - magna cum laude. While working at Pinal County I received my Part 107 to man our department's drones for construction and public relations footage, as well as to create Ortho mosaics and other deliverables. Over time I have become very active in Arizona’s Geographic Information Council (AGIC), participating in workgroups and have been recently voted to co-chair the education workgroup.

    Richard Ra

    Sr GIS Specialist

    Atmos Energy Corporation

Richard was fortunate enough to step foot into his career in GIS while working as a contractor for Atmos Energy. Originally unsure of what he wanted to do in life - it took 3 changes in majors to even hear the acronyms GIS and it’s meaning. He still had a desire to learn more, but by then, he was already locked in for graduation and in 2018, he received his BA in Criminology from the University of Texas at Dallas. Later in 2021, he became the GIS Technician and GIS Department lead for the City of Richardson, where he had the opportunity to continue his technical education through exposure to many different angles of GIS work including administration, data management and web services. He has since come full circle and recently re joined Atmos Energy, but this time as a full-time Senior GIS Specialist. In early 2022, he started volunteering for URISA Texas and has since helped create numerous events for the URISA Texas website.

What Have You Accomplished? Resume Advice from a Hiring Manager

As part of our June Professional Development Month URISA Texas is hosting a virtual resume clinic led by Chris Akin, GISP.  Come check it out and get your questions answered!

    Presentation Outline:

At some point, everyone looks for a job, whether straight out of college or partway through a career, voluntarily or involuntarily.  In standard hiring practices, all job applicants have to submit a resume, whether through the human resources department, a colleague, or even passed on by a friend.

This resume is a job candidate’s one shot at making a first impression. The right one can land you a job interview. The wrong one can put you straight into the "no" pile.

So, what makes a strong resume?  For starters, resumes need to highlight accomplishments, not previous responsibilities.  To ensure that your resume stands out, here are some tips I have compiled after sifting through countless resumes over the years.

In this interactive presentation, Chris will go through one of your resumes to highlight its strengths, discuss its weaknesses, and help you think about your accomplishments.

Email your resume to resumes@paratumsolutions.com ahead of time to have your resume reviewed!

    About the Host:

Chris Akin, GISP, is the President of Paratum Solutions, a privately-owned consulting firm specializing in GIS consultation and implementation solutions for municipal, utility, and campus clients across the US.  Chris is also a past Chairman of the Board for the Texas and New England URISA Chapters and a former Board member of URISA International.

Chris has been in the GIS industry for over 20 years with a focus on developing, implementing, and managing GIS lines of business, projects, and personnel.  Chris runs GIS Resumes as a Paratum division to help candidates improve their resumes and land the perfect job.
